Deuteronomy 12:31

12:31 You must not worship the Lord your God the way they do! ¹  For everything that is abhorrent ²  to him, ³  everything he hates, they have done when worshiping their gods. They even burn up their sons and daughters before their gods!

Deuteronomy 18:12

18:12 Whoever does these things is abhorrent to the Lord and because of these detestable things ⁴  the Lord your God is about to drive them out ⁵  from before you.

Leviticus 18:24-25

Warning against the Abominations of the Nations

18:24 “‘Do not defile yourselves with any of these things, for the nations which I am about to drive out before you ⁹  have been defiled with all these things. 18:25 Therefore ¹⁰  the land has become unclean and I have brought the punishment for its iniquity upon it, ¹¹  so that the land has vomited out its inhabitants.

[18:12]  ⁴ tn Heb “these abhorrent things.” The repetition is emphatic. For stylistic reasons, to avoid redundancy, the same term used earlier in the verse has been translated “detestable” here.

[18:12]  ⁵ tn The translation understands the Hebrew participial form as having an imminent future sense here.

[15:16]  ⁶ sn The term generation is being used here in its widest sense to refer to a full life span. When the chronological factors are considered and the genealogies tabulated, there are four hundred years of bondage. This suggests that in this context a generation is equivalent to one hundred years.

[15:16]  ⁷ tn Heb “they”; the referent (“your descendants”) has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[15:16]  ⁸ tn Heb “is not yet complete.”

[18:24]  ⁹ tn Heb “which I am sending away (Piel participle of שָׁלַח [shalakh, “to send”]) from your faces.” The rendering here takes the participle as anticipatory of the coming conquest events.

[18:25]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “And.” The Hebrew conjunction ו (vav, “and”) can be considered to have resultative or even inferential force here.
